 Hi JK Parents!

We celebrated another birthday as Eden joined our other two 5 year olds!  Happy Birthday to you!  And thank you for the special treat!

We love learning about favorite stories, and enjoy seeing the text in different languages!

Life on the Farm!

We started out our week making Pumpkin Spice Play Doh.  The children all made tiny pumpkin groups of ten!  They helped measure and mix the ingredients and loved the fall spices.

We acted out the story, There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed Some Leaves, and used sequencing to help us remember the different parts of the story!  Each child had a different part and used a sign to show which item they represented.  It was so fun!

Social Studies:

We began studying what life on a farm is like.  We are learning about the different jobs necessary to run a farm, and what the different animal's needs are.  The children watched a video of children learning to milk a cow.  We talked about Holstein Cows and practiced "milking cows" from a simulated udder-a plastic glove filled with watered down white paint.  Mr. Bailey's cousin came in to talk about like on a farm.  He looked soooo much like Mr. Bailey, some children in Kindergarten thought it WAS Mr. Bailey.  :). Hmmmm.  He taught us that cows have 2 stomachs, and many other interesting cow facts.  They drink the equivalent of a bathtub full of water every day!

Fine Motor:

We practiced connecting words to the objects they match with items from our sequencing story.

The children also began painting and decorating their life size miniature people that look like them.  They are so cute and I cannot wait for you to see the finished works of art!  :).

Math & Science:

We conducted an experiment, building on our sink or float experiment, with coins and boats made from aluminum foil.  The children talked about ways to improve their designs as we filled them with coins and experimented with different shapes and sizes to keep them afloat.

We are practicing counting, writing numbers, and practicing counting by 10's and 5's for some who are ready to move to that.

Literacy:

We are working on onset sounds of words as well as ending sounds.  We practice our Haggerty Phonics each morning in our meeting.  We practiced recognizing letters at the beginning and ending of words even if we were not familiar with the words.

We are beginning to "read" as we underline each word and follow along with our morning message.

Specials Classes:

PE took us on a hike around the grounds of Roycemore as well as mindfulness activities along with lots of movement and fun.

We created self portraits made from various random items in Art class.

Music and Movement was so fun!  They practiced dance moves and poses as they pretended to be different animals.

Our Northwestern Work Study Aid is so amazing!  "Mr. K!"

Ms. Hilda always chooses the best stories to read and books for us to take home!

Social Emotional:

We worked on our language each day and different ways to communicate needs to peers and teachers.  "May I please" is one we use to ask for something, and "I feel like" or "I wish..." are also great ways to begin when chatting with friends.

Have a great weekend!
