Hi JK Parents and Friends!

Yippee!!  It's Dr. Seuss Week(s) in JK!

Don't Wake up Daddy is Ajay's favorite game!

We started off the week by playing a Dr. Seuss game with the Trick a ma stick!  It's one of my favorite games and the children loved it!  It's called, "I Can Do That!" if you  want to have one for home.

We created rhyming books by writing and illustrating rhyming words.  We read The Cat in the Hat and talked about what we would do if Thing 1 and Thing 2 came to our house.  Would you let them jump on your bed?  Would you tell them to go away?  Would you tell your mommy and daddy if the Cat in the Hat came to visit you?

We counted and categorized items by things you play with in water and out of water.

We read a story about the Sneeches and each child decided if their Sneech would have a star on its belly.  The story provides a great conversation starter about inclusion, and how we can look different but still be the same on the inside.  The Sneeches with a star on their belly had "Frankfurter Roasts" and all sorts of parties where they didn't include the Sneeches without stars....and then Sylvester McMonkey McBean came to town and all sorts of things changed.

We read my favorite Dr. Seuss book, The Kings Stilts, and practiced walking on stilts!  We shared ideas about having work time and play time and that both are necessary!  And, in JK, our work time IS play time.

We read The 500 Hats of Bartholemew Cubbins and talked about how to group 10's and 100's to make 500.  We practiced writing groups of 10's and 100's and 500.

In Art class, the children painted Symmetrical paintings by folding and using just one side of their paper to press and print an image.  They are beautiful!

We have pulled the books by Dr. Seuss that do not represent the values we cherish at Roycemore.  The stories we include in our classroom curriculum are not limited to Dr. Seuss but we are intentional about carefully representing all students in activities and curriculum everyday.  Please let us know if you have any questions about any of this as it's been forefront in the news and a topic of deep conversation and study recently as we strive to provide the most positive and inclusive classroom to all.

I received my first Covid vaccine and still have a sore arm but am halfway to being fully vaccinated.  Feel free to ask any questions.

Have a lovely Sunday!

Ms. Massey
