Hi JK Parents.

Math, Science, Social Studies & Social Emotional:

We are learning about the Inuit people, both historically and today.  We have connected with the Inuit people through videos and learned how they build an igloo, hunt and fish in the frozen arctic lands.  We watched a video of a Kindergarten class of Inuit children and learned about their traditions and history.

We are all excited about the Olympics and have begun celebrating the athletes by makin our own downhill ski run outside our classroom.  Each student decorated a skiier and placed them on the mountain.  We love putting together whole class projects and talking about communities outside of our school.   We are also talking about what it means to be an athlete and how to show good sportsmanship.

We are practicing subsidizing with 10 frames and solving story problems in our heads using manipulatives and visual cards.  Jack Hartman has a song for everything.  I let them know I am saving them so much time in their lives, by saving them time counting when they don't need to begin with one but can begin with 5 or 10.

Literacy:

We are using our reading strategies and talked about a few of them, including "Flippy Dopphin", where if the first vowel sound doesn't make sense you use the alternate sound.  We love practicing endings of words too as we study digraphs and blends

Fine Motor:

JK  Bunnies completed January self portraits using colored pencils.   We made Olympic flags and torches in preparation for the Olympics next week.  We made "people flags" and talked about the countries competing in the Winter Olympics!  JK loved painting all week with puffy paint.  They love 3D pictures!  They worked on heart paintings in art with "warm" and "cool" colors!

Social Emotional:

We are continuing our Kindness month calendar, and today talked about things for which they could thank their parents. They talked about thanking you for driving them to school, making breakfast, playing with them, helping them take a bath, etc.  We talked about things to do at home, writing thank you notes to our parents, picking up trash, giving compliments etc.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ms. Massey
