Hi JK Parents.

We began the week with Art, with Mr. Matt, and used pastels and water colors to create Day of the Dead pictures.

Literacy:

We practiced our handwriting along with our Dd's, and dictated and wrote and illustrated stories about our own Spookly in the pumpkin patch.  Sounding out words and writing the first and last letters in a word is great when using inventive spelling.  The rest of the letters will fill in as their understanding progresses.  We used Dd stamps to trace and then free hand practiced using the correct letter formation.

We completed an activity where the children matched upper and lower case letters.  The children read books from our RAZ books, practiced Zoo Phonics, worked on blends and digraphs, and beginning and ending sounds.  We tapped out the syllables in everyone's name using rhythm sticks.  We created compound words by joining two words.

The list of Fry's 100 Sight Words is included as well as the list of common digraphs and blends.  If you want to dance and sing/practice Zoo Phonics at home, there are many videos on Youtube.  Be sure the animals begin with Ally Alligator and Bubba Bear as there are different versions, as well as using lower case letters.

Math & Science:

We voted for our favorite candy each day and charted the results using tally marks.  Sour Patch Kids and Whoppers were tied until Ms. Spring voted for Whoppers for the win.  We will continue voting next week as we get closer to our Halloween celebration.  The children practiced writing numbers and figuring out answers to story problems using manipulatives.  We counted with corn and blocks.

We played a graphing game where the students counted, added and graphed different Halloween costumes.  They love using dry erase markers and hearing stories about fun costumes as they practiced adding and thinking about things in terms of more than and less than.

We read the story How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin and talked about biggest, smallest and medium and predicted how many seeds were in each pumpkin.  We are excited to carve and then roast pumpkin seeds next week!  We learned more about the life cycle of a pumpkin and all of the different things made from pumpkins, and how they are classified-technically a fruit but grouped with vegetables because of their savory and not sweet flavor.

We sang, danced, Go Noodled, Yoga'd, built, created, shared and learned a great amount this week!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Massey
