 Hi JK Parents!

Happy Olympics time!  Our opening ceremonies were a lot of fun as we paraded our olympic flags around the school, carried our torches, and wore laurel wreaths signifying victory (back when ancient Rome and Greece competed in the first Olympic Games).  We learned about the various flags and the other countries competing in the games.  We talked about what it means to have an advantage, for instance, if you live in a cold weather climate and mountainous place, you are able to ski more than someone who lives where there are not mountains, so you would have an advantage.  We also watched a video of the skeleton, which looks completely scary to me but they loved it!

JK Grocery store is open for business!  We love adding the numbers and giving change as we are learning how much each coin is worth!

We have another fabulous five year old in JK!  Happy Birthday Asher!

We watched the groundhog via youtube video (one day later thanks to our snow day) come out of his hole to see his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter!  :).  We made groundhogs that peek out of their holes!

And a lost tooth and visit fron the tooth fairy happened this week too!

Claire shared traditional Vietnamese clothes to celebrate!

Social Studies:

JK celebrated Vietnamese and Chinese New Year, making lanterns and singing songs, looking at costumes and talking about different symbols and ways to celebrate!  Thank you Jessica, Claire's mom, for sending in traditional money envelopes given for us to see!  We loved learning about traditions as well as games you play to celebrate, and enjoyed the excitement Claire shared with us!

Fine Motor:

We are studying the great artist, Claude Monet, this week.  We have learned about his life in France and painted water color pictures of Water Lillies.  We added water lillies using tissue paper and scrunching them around pencils to form them to resemble flowers.  We talked about the many ways Monet painted the garden and how different it looks depending on the season and time of day.

Math & Science:

We are continuing our money study as we are all reciting the poems and learning to quickly identify each coin.  We are learning about the different people printed on our currency/coins.  We have begun putting together a class grocery store where we are practicing estimating the cost of grocery items, and then adding up the total of all of our purchases.

Have a lovely weekend!  I can't wait to hear about any olympic games watching!
