Happy December!

Literacy:

We are studying the great author, William Steig, and are reading through his stories that capture human qualities in animals, called anthropomorphism.  They are learning to pronounce this!  We read Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, one of my favorites, and discussed the moral of the story.  The children are learning to think about the lesson a story is teaching you and how you can relate the lesson to "real life".  We also read Doctor DeSoto, Brave Irene and Shrek.  We learned about William Steig's life, and that he lived to be 95 years old and was from Brooklyn, NY.  He began his career drawing cartoons for The New Yorker.  His stories are magical and JK has loved listening and reading along with them.

We practiced writing the letter Kk using white boards, and hunted for Kk words.  We talked about the letter Cc and that some words make the same sound so have to learn which begin with Kk and which begin with Cc.

The children created their own magic bones after reading the story The Amazing Bone, in which a bone was alive and provided wishes to it's owner.  We illustrated our pictures with the one wish we want to come true.

Math & Science:

We stirred ingredience while helping Mrs. Koss cook Latkes for Hanukkah.  Thank you to Jordan and Melissa!  It was so great learning about the amazing history and sharing in the celebration of Hanukkah.  We made menorrahs and counted the candles, adding another one to each page of our books.

The class played number Bingo as well as working with "Tens Frames" to make sets of 10 with bears.  We worked through story problems using the bears while adding and subtracting from the Tens frames.

Fine Motor:

The children designed their own "dozen" cookies and learned what a dozen as well as a "baker's dozen" means.  We are counting to 10 and grouping items (and cookies) by 10's and thinking in terms of how many more or less to make 10.  We used bears and Tens frames

We made pizzas to model Pete's a Pizza, another favorite story by William Steig.

French:

Jk bunnies have been working on orally counting in French. This week we worked up to 9 and took turns counting items on the screen as each child lead the class in counting.

We wish you a lovely rest of your Hanukkah celebrations if you celebrate.  Have a great weekend!
