 Hi JK Parents.

We are celebrating the legend of Johnny Appleseed, and learning all about apples this week.

We read stories about Johnny Chapman and his adventures as he planted apple seeds across the US.  We completed a class chart summarizing all of the things we learned about him.

JK Bunnies read Ten Apples up on Top and practiced balancing apples while walking.  We were impressed with their balance and agility.  They each wrote the letters of their names on apples and created self portrait people balancing apples on their heads.  Take a look outside our classroom where we have them displayed.

We celebrated another birthday in JK.  Happy Birthday, Macie!
We are so excited to welcome Summer to our classroom!

Frozen Yoga was amazing!  They are working on their tree pose.

Math and Science:

We practiced simple addition and subtraction with apple manipulatives and experiemented with items that sink and float.  The students made predictions and then recorded the results on a class chart.  Does an apple float?  It depends on if it has been peeled or not!  :). We completed a predictions sheet and then tested our ideas with different items.  We leared that something that is buyant floats!

We practiced making groups of 10 apples using different combinations.

We considered the question:  "Would you rather ber 20 feet tall or one inch tall?"  I love hearing their thought processes as they consider life in both scenarios.

We measured and wrote the ingredients to applesauce and then followed the recipe to make our own applesauce.  We learned the importance of sequencing when following a recipe and used measuring cups to measure.

We had a taste test and used descriptive words to discuss how each different color apple tasted.  We voted for our favorite apple and tallied the results as a class.

We learned about the life cycle of an apple, and acted out the different stages of an apple, as we sang apple tree songs.

Literacy:

JK practiced writing words on Johnny Appleseed hats as some JKers wrote or worked on stories.  They all practiced writing letters using white boards and on our classroom white board.  Vertical writing is incredibly helpful in the left right brain connection and crossing the midline.  We talked about curvy and stick letters.

They looked adorable for their school pictures Tuesday.  It was wonderful to see their smiles if only for a few seconds!  I miss seeing faces.

We read the story about "a little red house with no doors and windows and a star inside".  They were excited to see the star inside an apple when you cut it horizontally!  We finished painting with apples on our books and wrote our favorite way to eat apples.

Have a lovely weekend!
