Good morning JK parents!

This week was full of apple themed fun!

Literacy:
We read many apple books and wrote apple-related words.  Some of the books we read include:  There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves, Picking Apples and Pumpkins, Bunny and Giraffe go Apple Picking, Apple Man, Apples, Pick Me an Apple, Under the Apple Tree, The Giving Tree, What's so Terrible about Swallowing an Apple Seed, Apple Trees, An Apple's Life, Autumn is for Apples, Apple Countdown, Picking Apples, Apples A-Z, One Little Two Little Three Little Apples.  We practiced our writing using correct letter formation.  We talked about letter sounds and how some letters have two sounds.  The vowels are the most challenging as there are many different rules to learn!  Also, the W and Y are often confused or flipped for sounds and recognition.

Math and Science:
We played a counting apple game and practiced our tally mark counting.  We practiced number writing on white boards and writing paper.  We counted as a class multiple times per day to learn the song of numbers, while also discussing those tricky teen numbers and how the one always comes first!  We counted dots on cupcake pictures and wrote the corresponding number, and then cut out cupcakes to make a community collage of all of their combined work!  I love group projects as it encourages group thinking and compromise, along with multiple other social skills.  We practiced categorizing blocks into colors.  We introduced our fall theme and what happens when the season changes.

Fine Motor:
The children used their fine motor skills while making sequenced pictures, first coloring then cutting them out.  The children made glittery pumpkins using different shapes we talked about and cut.  They sounded out different colors of apples and then colored different apples according to the corresponding color/word.

We learned some new fall songs and played with orbees in our sensory bin.

We practiced our skit using the story "There was an Old Lady who Swallowed some Leaves" and took turns acting out the sequenced items she swallowed to make a scarecrow!  They performed this for the class.  It's an excellent way to practice sequencing and public speaking!

Have a wonderful week!  We are jumping into our fall theme and will be going on a scavenger hunt this week to look for autumn items outside.
