Hi JK Parents and Friends!
This week we made flower gardens using tape. Tape art is amazing for strengthening those tiny muscles in the hands, necessary for writing.
Math & Science
We are making observations, measuring and documenting in cm the growth of our grass and bean plants. It was exciting to see them after the weekend. Everyone is talking to their plants now, and taking great care to water them and be sure they are in a great spot for sun exposure.
We loved our mystery reader again! Thank you Heather (Sawyer's Mom). So amazing.
We watched Earth Day videos and made a long list of ways we can help make our planet better. JK picked up bags of trash from the neighborhood on Earth Day, and the children are working to conserve energy in their homes by turning off unused lights and unplugging appliances when not in use, along with conserving water and reusing things. Reduce, reuse and recycle! Some children are composting in their homes as well. We picked up trash around the neighborhood as part of our Earth Day activities. The children are incredibly enthusiastic about helping clean up the Earth!
We made posters and showed our support against racism on Friday, as we stood along Ridge Road to greet cars. What an amazing class of children!
We played a Math game called, "Guess the Number", where I writer a number and hide it under a magnet, and the children have a range and hints of higher or lower to guess it. Nathaniel has been amazing at guessing the number on his first try!
We are making our very last calendars for the year, and completing our alphabet we have been working on since August. I cannot believe it. The days are long but the years are short, and this year has seemed both fleeting and long. While it has been different in many ways, it has shown me the goodness in all children. They have modified their play to accommodate the rules of Covid and still found the most creative ways to connect and interact. They have formed lasting friendships and a community in our classroom like none I have ever seen. They will be the most capable and prepared Kindergarteners in the history of time, in that they have had to act independently and have mastered tasks at a faster pace out of necessity. I'm so proud and happy for the work we have all performed. It took a team and we did it. :). You are all a part of that team, as your support from home helped each day as they were confident and brave and received the encouragement they needed.
Literacy
Reading centers have talked about alternate endings, favorite characters, settings. non-fiction and fiction, living and non-living, beginning, middle and end, syllables, beginning, middle and ending sounds, blends and digraphs, vowels and consonants, and strategies for decoding words...
Have a lovely week!
Ms. Massey
