Hi JK Parents!
What a wonderful short week we have had in JK. We have been learning all about our five senses and how we use them. We read books about texture and our senses, comparing surfaces of items we eat and touch. We colored, cut and glued five senses signs together and then played a game to answer questions about which senses we would use in each scenario.
We have begun our writing and other assessments and will continue to cycle through the students throughout the school year, along with our everyday assessments through observation. This time in the school year is when those fine motor skills need strengthening, so please encourage peeling oranges, playing with play-dough or clay, monkey bars, sorting and placing, stickers etc. to encourage their development.
During our short week, we also started to work on our scissor/cutting skills. You can work with your student at home with their cutting skills- we tell them to keep "their thumb on top"and only "rotate their paper".
Music: We are turning our music class focus towards more movement based classes- the JK'ers are THRILLED! We loved to move and dance to music this week. Mrs. Redman took us on a tour driving through Australia as we "visited" various cities.
Art: The bunnies used multiple senses to explore scented markers to create art work.
Math and Science: Many of our math skills this year will be developed in our morning meeting/calendar along with centers. We will focus on orally counting, as well as physical number formation up to 30. Other skills that we work on daily in our morning meeting are patterns and sequencing, counting by 5's and 10's as a group, sorting and categorizing, and simple addition and subtraction.
We are using tally marks to count votes as we ask the students to answer questions. They love placing their name under a column of choice as their friends watch/take turns.
P.E: Our JK bunnies have been playing simple group games in order to develop our listening skills. Coach is so sweet and patient with our kiddos as we all work on following one and two-step directions.
French: In French this week, we started learning color words. The bunnies are learning songs to help them remember their color words, and they loved using props in whole group games!
Please make sure to check your student's backpack daily for things that may be coming home. We are sending home a form for PICTURE DAY - This upcoming Tuesday (September 14th). Follow the directions on the form to order pictures.
Don't forget to bring library books Monday!
Great job Ms. Massey!
