Hi JK Parents!

Happy Valentine's Day!  We had an amazing party and can't thank you enough for the wonderful supplies and treats you contributed!  I have heard many times that it was "the best day ever"!  The kindness and love was abounding.

Trying to decide which painting to donate for the auction April 30th.  I hope you are all planning on attending!  We will also be donating a Pizza and Popsicles" party!

I had to include some pics of my cute little Charlie!  He loves the snow and doesn't understand that his mom is still a Dallas girl when it comes to weather, so he pulls me behind his leash like I am water skiing.  :).

Social Studies/Literacy:
We began celebrating Black History Month by learning about many historical icons.  JK loved learning about Garrett Morgan and his invention of the stop light, among many others.  We read biographies about Harriet Tubman and Ruby Bridges and watched videos and read many books about black leaders.  Our classroom is multicultural in that each lesson and learning activity regardless of our theme or monthly celebration incorporates different prespectives.  We intentionally seek materials that are inclusive of multiple perspectives--not only when our theme is "Black History".

Math and Science:
We continued our study on coins/currency and practiced adding different values of coins.  JK students are learning about the different presidents on the coins as well as the monuments so they are able to recognize both front and back of coins.  If you are looking for writing activities at home, everyone would benefit from number formation/writing.  As we practice each week there are still many inverted numbers.  We played a game on Valentine's day as we counted, charted and graphed hearts and practiced writing numbers after adding the totals.  The number of hearts kept getting smaller as the candy hearts disappeared.  :).

We introduced states of matter and will be conducting experiments as we change solids to liquids.  We love hands on in JK.  They are the most observant scientists!  This goes for their observations of everything, not just science.

Fine Motor:
We decorated Valentine's Day mailboxes by cutting, pasting, using stickers and coloring.  JK bunnies made cards with candy hearts and popsicle sticks.

JK students are working on coin books, placing stickers of different coins to match each page and then writing about the president.

Have a lovely long weekend!

Ms. Massey
